EDWARD L. (Ted.) SMITH, BA (Hons), Dip Educ, Bristol

A retired teacher, he was Head of the history department and sometime organiser of adult evening classes, Peebles High School (1946-77). A former member/vice-chairman of March Riding Committee, for nine years he was Editor of the Beltane Programme, as well as being Warden of Neidpath (1969), President Tweeddale Society, member of Callants Club and Guildry Corporation, and Honorary President of the PRFC.

JAMES GORDON FYFE (Lawyer - Writer to the Signet)

Born in 1918 in Peebles, the son of Alexander Fyfe, lawyer, he was educated at George Watsons and Edinburgh University (MA, LLB). He served in the Royal Artillery (1939-46) and then returned to Peebles to join the firm of Blackwood & Smith WS, in 1948. Latterly the Senior Partner, he retired from full-time practice in 1983, though continuing as Consultant until 1988. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD) (1956), appointed a Deputy Lieutenant (1966), and Warden of Neidpath (1970).


Born Peebles in 1908, and educated at Peebles and Glasgow Academy, he was a general medical practitioner in Peebles from 1935 to 1973, when he was awarded the MBE. He was Warden of Neidpath in 1961. He died in May 1990.


Minister of The Old Parish Church of Peebles - its twenty-third since the Reformation - he was educated at the High School of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow before he came to Peebles in 1970. In addition to his considerable professional and pastoral duties in Peebles and surrounding parishes, he has a wide and varied involvement in the whole community and area. A Callant and member of the Guildry Corporation, he was President of the Rotary Club of Peebles in 1974-75, and Warden of Neidpath in 1984.
